MHA Reports: Overview

Quality of Care

The information in this report is designed to assist consumers in making informed choices about their health care. The data is from Hospital Compare, a federal quality Web site. It provides useful information about the hospital care you should expect to receive if you have a heart attack, heart failure or pneumonia or are having surgery. However, the report does not contain specific information about care provided by hospitals for other medical conditions.

Preventable Hospitalizations

Today, hospitals are challenged to meet the demands of an increasingly diverse and aging population. Identifying the right mix of services and areas of performance improvement continues to be an ongoing strategic priority. Through its comparison of county and regional rates to state and national averages, this report assesses geographic variations in quality and raises concerns about access to primary care and outpatient services in Missouri.

Community Investment

Whether it has 500 beds or is a small, rural hospital with 25 beds, every Missouri hospital is an asset to its community. As patients, we rely on hospitals to provide essential medical services. We also understand the vital economic contributions from the hospital and its employees strengthen our communities. These two reports illustrate how hospitals meet their community obligations through charity care and other community financial contributions and how their investments into the community benefit our economy.

Hospital Charges and Collections

This report displays charges for each of the 60 most common inpatient medical conditions that are treated by Missouri's 109 adult acute care hospitals. The information is grouped by the hospitals in the St. Louis, Kansas City, mid-sized city and rural markets. Using this information, consumers who are responsible for paying for their own hospital services will be better informed as they contact local hospitals about their options.
